Compose window size options

Compose messages in a window that’s right for you. The default is a small compose window that’s great for checking other emails as you type and getting things done quickly. If you prefer a larger window, you can switch to full-screen when you need it, or set full-screen as default.

Click Compose -- this is the default window.

  1. Click Compose.
  2. Click Full-screen expand icon expand in the upper right corner of the compose window.

To use full-screen by default, click More options drop-down arrow More options in the lower right corner and choose Default to full-screen.

  1. Click Compose.
  2. Hold the Shift key while clicking Full-screen expand icon expand in the upper right corner of the compose window.

For quicker access, hold the Shift key while you click Compose.

Hold the Ctrl or  key while you click Compose.

Gmail reply compose

Reply and forward

Open a message and click Reply to all, Reply, or Forward in the box under the message.

  • To compose in a larger window, click the Recipient arrow arrow next to the recipient’s name and select Pop out reply.
  • Once you’ve popped out the reply, click Full-screen expand icon expand to compose in full-screen.

Keyboard shortcuts: r for reply, a for reply all, and f for forward. Hold Shift while using those shortcuts to open in a new window.
